If your drive
isn??™t currently set up this way, start the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool
(\Program Files\BitLocker\BdeHdCfg.exe) and follow the prompts. When
your drive is ready, open the BitLocker Drive Encryption page in Control
Panel and click Turn on BitLocker.
Hint: If you don??™t have Vista Ultimate, you can do pretty much the same thing
with either FreeOTFE (http://www.freeotfe.org/) or TrueCrypt (http://www.
truecrypt.org/), both of which are free and compatible with all editions of Vista.
472 | Chapter 8: Users and Security
Here??™s how to encrypt a file:
1. Right-click one or more files in Windows Explorer and select Properties.
2. Under the General tab, click the Advanced button.
3. Turn on the Encrypt contents to secure data option, click OK, and click
OK again.
See ???Add Encrypt/Decrypt commands to context menus,??? later
in this section, for a quicker way to encrypt and decrypt files.
4. If you encrypt a folder that contains files or other folders, Windows will
ask you whether or not you want those contents to be encrypted as well.
In most cases, you??™ll want to answer Yes. If you decline, the folder??™s current
contents will remain unencrypted, and only newly created files will
be encrypted. See ???The ins and outs of folder encryption,??? later in this
chapter, for details.
After a file has been encrypted, you can continue to use it normally. You??™ll
never have to manually decrypt an encrypted file in order to view it.
