Or, in SeaMonkey, go to
Tools ??? Popup Manager ??? Allow Popups From This Site, and click the Add
button to exclude the current site from being blocked.
Firefox and SeaMonkey also give you more control than IE over JavaScript,
the programming language used to facilitate most pop ups and add some
other annoying traits to web sites. In Firefox, go to Tools ??? Options, choose
the Web Features category, and click the Advanced button next to Enable
Javascript. Or, in SeaMonkey, go to Edit ??? Preferences ??? Advanced ???
Scripts & Plugins. In either browser, you can prevent sites from moving or
resizing windows, changing the text in the status bar, and more, by simply
turning off the respective options. See ???Improve Any Web Site,??? earlier in
this chapter, for other ways to make sites less annoying.
So, now you??™re blocking pop ups, but ad windows are still showing up? If
you see pop ups when you??™re not surfing the Web, your PC may be infected
with spyware, software designed to display advertisements and sometimes
even monitor your surfing habits. (Of course, the software you??™re using,
such as Windows Messenger, may be showing you its own ads, but that??™s a
different problem.) Spyware, adware, and other types of malware (malicious
software) come from some web sites (see ???Lock Down Internet Explorer,???
earlier in this chapter) and also piggy-back on some downloadable applications,
commonly P2P file-sharing programs and, strangely, many weatherforecasting
desktop applications.
