The backup doesn??™t
do you any good if you can??™t get at your files later, so it??™s important to take
steps to make sure you can restore your system from scratch if necessary.
340 | Chapter 6: Troubleshooting
So, assume your hard disk is completely dead, totally empty, or missing, and
you now need to restore your PC onto an empty volume.
If you have the Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise edition of Windows Vista,
you can use the Complete PC Backup and Restore tool for this purpose, as
described in ???Back Up Your Entire System,??? earlier in this chapter. To
restore a Complete PC backup, boot off your Vista setup disc (see
Chapter 1), and when you see the Install Now page, click the Repair your
computer link and then click Windows Complete PC Restore, as shown
earlier in Figure 6-3.
So, what do you do if you don??™t have a genuine, bootable
Vista installation CD, but rather only a proprietary ???Recovery???
disc or partition provided by your PC manufacturer? In
this case, you??™ll need to first use your PC??™s Recovery feature
to rebuild your default Windows installation. When that??™s
done, restart your PC and press F8 to open the Advanced
Boot Options menu described in ???What to Do When Windows
Won??™t Start,??? and depicted in Figure 6-4, earlier in this
chapter. Use the arrow keys to select the Repair Your Computer
option and then follow the prompts. When the System
Recovery Options page appears, click Windows
Complete PC Restore.
