"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

Whether they
didn??™t understand the implication of the risks or implicitly or explicitly refused to take
responsibility, this makes any disaster recovery process very difficult.
Techies usually understand the various risks and their implications, and we often
take it for granted that others will as well. Something such as the impact of downtime
might seem so obvious to us that we don??™t press it enough when talking with business
units. Just because a business owner signs off on a particular approach doesn??™t obligate
her to taking responsibility unless she truly understands what she??™s signing (the legal
concept of signing something ???under duress???).
Techniques to Remove This Roadblock
While most of the work I do is consulting, I do teach on a regular basis as well. One
thing I know from experience is that you can??™t teach something unless you truly understand
it yourself. Given that idea, have the business owners explain back to you what
the implications are of the plan they??™re approving. If there is any hesitation, they don??™t
fully understand.
Using the same approach, have the business owners write the section of the sign-off
document that explains what the implications are.
