You may be shocked at how
often the response will be, ???No, that isn??™t quite it.???
CHAPTER 12 n REALISTIC DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 315
Roadblock: Ineffective Communication of Risk
The word ???risk??? has its own baggage??”some good, but mostly very heavy, ugly baggage,
like those huge oversized pieces of luggage covered in some ??™70s upholstery style. As a
natural course of human nature, people often avoid the word ???risk??? and any thought of
possible repercussions until the last minute. (Sadly, I admit that I??™m a bit of a procrastinator.
It??™s a problem for me, but I??™ll deal with it tomorrow.) Somehow, someway, you need to
make each functional group (IT, business groups, management, and so on) aware of the
risks it faces.
Description of the Roadblock
When working in a disaster recovery situation, it??™s common to have to resort to the worstcase
scenario to return to an operational status. Perhaps that means a loss of a single
day??™s data. When that happens, the business owners of the system will often say that isn??™t
acceptable, even if they signed off on the disaster recovery plan themselves.
