Roadblock: Lack of Management/Executive Buy-In
Assuming that you??™ve raised awareness of the need for disaster recovery planning, you
still need to get the buy-in from management??”that is, the time or the financial resources
to achieve what you??™ll be doing. The general solution is to present disaster recovery as an
ongoing cost of doing business??”a necessity much like pens and sticky notes.
Description of the Roadblock
Overcoming the first hurdle of awareness can often lead to running into a wall of ???we just
can??™t afford this.??? I??™ve run into that wall more than once, and it knocks the wind out of
you. Working as an internal employee, nothing is more demoralizing than hearing that
you have a good idea but that it??™s not good enough to invest in.
Usually the issue is one of cost, either from an actual financial perspective, a time
perspective, or a logistical perspective of getting people to work together. An indirect
reason that cost can be an issue is that the higher you go in management, the larger the
???picture??? of the organization you see. While your immediate manager may see the value
in something that you want to do, his manager may not know enough about your job to
see that same value.
