It can also be helpful to have strategic allies within
any given department. A friend on the networking team can go a long way toward creating
an open environment to discuss the need for disaster recovery. Always use this approach
in earnest; don??™t make a friend just for this purpose.
It also may help to go to your peers for advice on the matter. Asking someone out of
the blue how she would approach disaster recovery is invasive. Asking her how she would
approach disaster recovery in the context of seeking advice is a passive inquiry. You??™ll
have a lot more luck with the latter than the former.
Your Management
I strongly recommend that you don??™t attempt to drive a disaster recovery planning
process until you spend at least a year at a company. Not only will that help you in

establishing credibility, it will give you time to learn the personalities of your coworkers.
This is especially important with your manager. Often you won??™t get any direct objection
to what you??™re proposing, so you??™ll need to be able to read the sign that the discussion is
falling on deaf or dismissive ears.
