Most
organizations treat IT/IS as an island. The other business units believe they shouldn??™t
need to worry about ???techie??? things:
??? ???And you??™re talking to me because . . .????
??? ???I thought you guys took care of all that stuff already.???
??? ???Disaster? What, is someone getting fired????
??? ???Uh huh. Uh huh. Uh huh. OK. Uh huh . . .??? (followed by lots of nodding with a
slightly glazed look in the eyes).
Generally, at this level, you??™ll find complete ignorance about what you??™re discussing.
You may have your hands full just trying to keep everyone??™s attention.
CHAPTER 12 n REALISTIC DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 308
Techniques to Remove This Roadblock
Try to do anything you can to remain focused on disaster recovery planning. If your company
is heavy on time scheduling and meeting notifications, schedule a 15- to 30-minute
meeting with yourself on this topic every day. If your organization is a bit more informal
when it comes to planning activities, a simple sticky note on your desktop reminding you
to take some time to plan is a simple but effective start (unless your monitor is already
covered with 200 sticky notes).
