CHAPTER 12 n REALISTIC DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 305
Description of the Roadblock
When it comes to raising awareness, strangely enough, the first person to start with is
you. You might be thinking, ???Aren??™t I already aware of the need for disaster recovery planning?
I??™m reading this book, after all.??? However, you??™ll face a lot of roadblocks on the way
to a disaster recovery plan. Think about what your job is like right now. How much time
do you have devoted to disaster recovery planning? My guess is little or none, unless your
company is in the middle of a disaster recovery (DR) project. If your job is anything like
the majority of DBA positions, you??™re probably doing all you can just to keep your head
above water. It is surprisingly easy to let disaster recovery slip off your radar while you
scramble in your day-to-day duties. I experience the just-keeping-my-head-above-water
syndrome myself.
The real problem is trying to raise the awareness of your team, your peers, your management,
executive management, and business units. It??™s actually easier if your peers and
management have no understanding of disaster recovery planning.
