In such instances, disaster
recovery planning is essentially dead. However, don??™t take the defeat personally or let it
demoralize you. Project failure happens, unfortunately more often than I??™d like to see.
Above all, don??™t take a failed project as a sign to give up. Do what you can, wait, and then
try again. Persistence without becoming a pest will pay off, eventually.
CHAPTER 12 n REALISTIC DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 304
IT VS. IS VS. EVERYONE ELSE
The department that handles computer-related activities is usually referred to as Information Technology
(IT), Information Systems (IS), or some slight variation thereof. While the role of this department
within any given business is becoming clearer each year, IT/IS still tends to be a catchall department for
anything having to do with technology. And in many organizations, there is a schism of sorts between
the rest of the business and the technology side of the company. No one really knows what those who
work in IT/IS do, nor do they want to know. Similarly, those in IT/IS are often focused more on technology
per se than on the business of the company of which IT/IS is a part.
