What Problems Does This Create?
As you may expect, isolationists can be difficult to bring into a group activity. They??™ve
probably become isolationists through negative experiences, so promises that ???this will
be different??? rarely work.
If you need to work with isolationists (whether in a technical role or a business
role), you must somehow gain access to their area of expertise. They??™re unlikely to provide
that access willingly, and forcibly doing so (by going above their heads and making
the request from their management) will result in only more alienation and a greater
desire for boundaries. Appealing to a higher authority may get you results, but you??™ll
make things worse for the next time you need to work with the isolationist.
How Do You Deal with These Problems?
Keep in mind that isolationists value respect and privacy. Once you bring them into the
fold of your disaster recovery planning, always say something like this: ???So James, this is
your area of expertise. What do you think???? Never try to speak for them, never try to summarize
what they do without validating the summary with them, and never begin with
assumptions regarding their area of expertise.
