This goes beyond simple pessimism.
Doomsayers see everything as an impending world-ending comet strike.
What Is Valued?
It may seem as if doomsayers value nothing, but actually, they value everything. They
don??™t want to see anything wasted or unsuccessful, so they??™re more inclined to pronounce
an activity doomed to fail rather than have people invest time, energy, and resources in
making it work. This applies in particular to new endeavors. Anything that veers from the
status quo could potentially be a waste of everyone??™s time.
Doomsayers value cost??”time, people, and money??”above all else. They look for
problems that will result in wasted cost and declare the activity doomed, hopefully before
it even starts.
Wanting to ???doom??? something doesn??™t come from spite, a power trip, or anything
malicious. Doomsayers sincerely want things to be successful. Current activities are
known to be successful; new activities may be a complete waste of time and resources if
they aren??™t successful. The mark of doom comes from a desire to maintain current productivity
rather than wasting it on a flawed allocation of cost.
