Many of my colleagues avoid the word ???disaster??? whenever possible. It??™s a negative
word that naturally creates a negative atmosphere when used around others. They say
that this negative atmosphere can essentially doom whatever you??™re doing, whether
you??™re working on a project, training, or even selling consulting services. Instead of
using the term???disaster recovery,??? my colleagues advocate using phrases such as ???high
availability??? or ???business continuity,??? both of which have a neutral, if not positive, connotation.
I agree with my colleagues that words have all sorts of ???baggage??? attached to
them, and the use of the word ???disaster??? does create a negative atmosphere. Where we
differ is that I think that a negative atmosphere is actually a good thing to create.
If you??™ve been reading this book at all, you know by now that I have no qualms about
speaking my mind or calling things how I see them. I have no fear of negative words or
wording something in a negative fashion. If I think someone says or does something
wrong, I will tell that person??”even an executive.
