It didn??™t accurately identify the impact of the risk (as defined earlier)
of a tornado strike. Thus, it was very nearly put out of business completely. Had the
company identified that impact and decided that the risk was so unlikely that further
protection (other than the safe) was too expensive and unnecessary, then having no
other environmental disaster protection would have been fine. The ultimate problem
was that the company didn??™t even consider it as a possibility.
How SQL Server 2005 Would Have Helped
The ideal way to mitigate an environmental disaster is to have a copy of the data in a different
physical location, at the very least. Database mirroring or log shipping would have
protected not only against a fire or the destruction of the facility, but also against something
as catastrophic as a direct hit from a tornado.
???Where is WHERE???? (Process Disaster)
Whenever I hear this DBA urban myth, it begins with, ???I know a guy who has a cousin
who knows a guy?????”a good indicator of a myth. As the story goes, two consultants are
working late on an online-ordering web site.
