The company did receive government-aid money and was able to reconstruct the
building and purchase new equipment, but its data system was gone. The information
stored on that system was gone. The plant managed to stay in business, but what was
once a mid-sized company became a small business, rebuilding from the ground up. It
was able to establish a new customer base, but it will probably be a decade before the
company returns to the size it once was.
CHAPTER 11 n DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 286
What Went Wrong
Having a durable, fireproof safe to store backup tapes was an excellent idea. Even
though this was an extreme environmental disaster, the safe may have protected the
company??™s data. The problem was that the safe was located in the same physical location
as the production data. Had the tapes been stored even one mile away, the data
wouldn??™t have been lost.
Wherever you live and whatever natural disaster you may face, such disasters aren??™t
a common occurrence. Even if a tornado forms, it??™s still unlikely that it will hit any specific
building. This company took the low risk of an extreme sort of environmental
disaster for granted.
