Basically,
you have time to seek shelter, and that??™s it.
The Scenario
A city in the Midwest not far from where I live was essentially obliterated by a tornado.
The base of the tornado was almost half a mile wide, and it was so strong that it completely
destroyed every building in its path. One of those buildings was a mid-sized
manufacturing plant.
The machinery on the manufacturing floor was connected to a database that contained
every conceivable piece of data related to the company??™s day-to-day operations.
It even contained accounting-related data. This system was critical to the plant??™s ability
to do business, so the IT staff were careful and backed up everything nightly and placed
the tapes in a fireproof safe.
The Result
The safe was housed at the plant. It was great that the staff had the foresight to place the
backup tapes in something durable and fireproof. However, the problem was that after
the tornado struck and completely destroyed the plant, no one could find the safe. It
probably ended up in a nearby forest, at the bottom of a lake, or perhaps embedded into
the concrete foundation of a house 40 miles away.
