No one understood
the impact of temperature when it came to server hardware. If an actual SQL Server
DBA had been part of the staff, and technologies such as clustering, database mirroring,
or log shipping had been implemented, the DBA would have more or less been obligated
to investigate why the servers were rebooting on a regular basis. Eventually, someone
would have discovered the cause (or convinced management of the cause).
nNote DBAs naturally become the glue that holds the IT staff together. To be successful as a DBA, you
need to know a little bit about development, hardware, operating systems, networking, and so on. You??™re
likely to interact with all these groups, no matter how separate your IT department is. Whenever there??™s an
issue with the system from the business users??™ perspective, you usually hear, ???There??™s a problem with the
database.??? Sound familiar? The DBA is often the logical point of contact for business users when interacting
with IT.
CHAPTER 11 n DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 283
Must.Have.More. Power. (Environmental/Hardware Disaster)
Whenever I bring up the topic of power when talking about disaster recovery, people??™s
thoughts immediately jump to redundant power supplies or ensuring all servers are connected
to an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
