??? Inappropriate server environment: This was not a data center, nor did it resemble
any version of one apart from containing servers and networking equipment. This
was essentially a storage closet. There was no HVAC control, no moisture control,
and clearly no protection from external elements. This is an obvious case of an
inappropriate environment. However, identifying a flawed environment is not
always so obvious.
??? No disaster recovery planning: If the organization in this example had performed
any sort of disaster recovery planning, the impact of heat or the impromptu server
room might have been reviewed and considered for both response and mitigation.
Simply planning for disaster recovery can result in positive changes in any environment,
regardless if any disaster occurs.
How SQL Server 2005 Would Have Helped
In this particular case, the version of SQL Server in use really didn??™t matter. Environmental
disasters are, by their very nature, technology-agnostic. It doesn??™t matter what type of
software or hardware you??™re using.
However, training could have helped in this or a similar situation.
