"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

It was almost like playing the technology
lottery: keep buying things, and the company might just get rich. Entire companies
were formed and backed by venture capitalists based on an idea that involved
technology (usually some sort of web site, hence the dot-com boom and bust). Having
a sound business plan was almost a waste of time.
It really isn??™t surprising that this overheating situation occurred. The same sort of
thing probably happened to lots of companies during that time frame. There were very
specific problems at work here that still happen in the present day:
CHAPTER 11 n DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 282
??? Dependence on a single physical location: If you choose to have all of your information
in the same place, you??™re taunting the fates to strike you down with some sort
of environmental disaster. While centralizing systems can make things more efficient
and cost-effective, it only takes one leaky pipe to destroy everything.
??? Lack of training: If you ask someone to do a job he isn??™t trained for, it??™s a certainty
that mistakes will be made. In this particular example, the IT staff did not realize
that heat has a drastic effect on the stability of any server.
