No one can deny how important
it is, though.
Some lucky organizations have extremely capable staff in every technology area, and
their ability to adapt and work without documentation is astounding. These organizations
usually skip testing and planning, yet somehow manage to respond to any scenario
thrown at them.
CHAPTER 11 n DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 277
However, even these organizations have the need for documentation and testing.
The fates have a wicked curveball. As capable as any IT group may be, it??™s better to be
prepared than to rely solely on individual skills. Reacting to a disaster on the fly also takes
more time without a specific, tested plan. A lot of organizations believe they??™re one of
these lucky, highly effective groups, but chances are, they aren??™t. While I have actually
seen extremely capable groups in action, they??™re extremely rare.
Without exception, testing disaster plans should never be optional. Periodic disaster
drills should be run at least once a year and should include as many factors as possible.
Testing isn??™t just a training exercise; it helps to uncover flaws in implementation or planning
itself.
