I??™ve combined some examples
of mitigation techniques for your consideration. This is far from an exhaustive list;
the intent here is to spark your imagination and expose you to new ways of viewing disaster
recovery planning.
CHAPTER 11 n DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING 274
Clustering and Log Shipping
You already know that clustering provides no protection against environmental
disaster??”only protection for the physical server nodes that provide access to the data.
What about the data itself? Log shipping is an excellent, inexpensive way of establishing
some sort of protection against environmental disasters. To make sure that data is stored
in a second location, augment clustering by implementing log shipping.
Clustering and Database Snapshots
Database snapshots can be useful in an environment where user disaster is probable.
You??™ve already seen how you can use database snapshots in multiple ways to respond to
some sort of user mistake. By simply combining a database snapshot with a hardwareprotection
technique such as clustering, you can account for a wide variety of disaster
situations.
