Guiding Principles
The first step is to establish some principles that everyone involved in planning for disaster
recovery can and should follow. Establishing common ground with others on your
team will take you a long way toward having a successful disaster recovery plan. Here
are the main principles I (try) to follow:
??? Do not confuse plan with task: I??™m guilty of doing this on a regular basis. In most
scenarios involving disaster recovery planning, I??™m involved more with helping
the planning portion and less with carrying out the plans. When I??™m in a position
where I need to both establish and document the plan, I may come up with great
ideas and simple procedures but then neglect to actually put them in place. Planning
should be abstract. Tasks are real. A plan implies a task list. By focusing on
the planning side, ignoring the concrete tasks involved is easy to do.
??? Plan for the big picture, but act on the wallet-sized photo: When working on a disaster
recovery plan, keep your big-picture goals in mind: reducing data loss and
maintaining system availability.
