Even if you have a redundant power
supply in your server, losing a power supply will place you at risk. You should also
attempt to obtain a backup power supply to replace the failed redundant power
supply to ensure availability.
??? No one knows everything: This chapter provided a brief overview of some of the
hardware issues you may face as a DBA. You can??™t be expected to know everything,
and you can??™t expect others to know DBA-specific items as they relate to hardware.
Keep the dialog going with your hardware staff, and both of you should benefit.
Never stop talking.
Summary
In this chapter, I covered numerous issues related to hardware, specifically discussing
how they might affect SQL Server. As a DBA, you must have at least a conceptual understanding
of a wide range of topics in order to interact successfully with the rest of the
business. As I said in the opening, I consider it to be bordering on irresponsibility to play
the ostrich with your head in the sand. The less you know about the big picture, the less
effective you??™ll be at your specialized position.
