In addition to ???know thy hardware,??? I do actually have a few other thoughts to leave
you with:
??? Be conversant: I??™m not advocating that you become an expert on hardware, a SAN
specialist, or anything like that. The key is to be able to converse with those who
are. The more you know the more effective you can be when it comes to developing
and implementing a sound disaster recovery plan.
??? Don??™t confuse bandwidth with latency: The majority of network problems that I??™ve
faced have actually been due to latency issues rather than bandwidth. Truly understanding
the difference is necessary when interacting with the network specialist
to see what types of tests are being performed.
CHAPTER 10 n HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS 267
??? Don??™t confuse backing up your data with archiving your data: If your organization
implements some sort of data-archival plan, you must remain adamant that
archiving is not sufficient for a backup/recovery plan, and it should not be mixed
with an existing plan. The two serve different business needs.
??? Don??™t confuse redundancy with backup: Having redundant hardware devices is not
the same thing has having backup devices.
