"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

Never rely on an archival process for backups.
Low-Cost SAN or NAS
???Archival??? hardware devices are becoming common now, with basic NAS or SAN devices
used to house data that may still be accessed (unlike the tape scenario) on demand. If
your organization decides to use this type of data-life-cycling approach to archiving and
wants to include portions of your database, stamp your feet and shout up at the sky,
???THIS ISN??™T THE SAME AS DISASTER RECOVERY!??? That is, if your organization wants
to use these devices as part of your disaster recovery approach.
CHAPTER 10 n HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS 258
Continuous Data Protection
When approaching disaster recovery, our ultimate goal is no data loss, ever. There is a
trend in the market right now to offer either software- or hardware-based continuous
data protection (CDP). Data is continually being transferred to either another device
(high-speed disk to low-speed disk, or low-speed disk to tape). While I have high hopes
for these approaches, numerous aspects to their implementation make me worry. Also,
be aware that CDP is quickly becoming a buzzronym, so use the acronym with care.
