Such data is not archived in the sense that I prefer;
such data is not completely removed from the system.
I seem to be losing the argument that archiving and partitioning are separate and
distinct functions of data. The popular view today of data archival essentially matches my
own view of partitioning. ???Archived??? data isn??™t really archived at all. Rather, it is moved to
a separate device while still retaining uninterrupted user access. C??™est la vie.
nNote One belief I do stand by is that archiving in any form is not the equivalent of backing up your data,
and thus is not sufficient for disaster recovery purposes.
Tape
A tape library might be used as a method of true archiving. However, it is extremely
important to resist the urge to kill two birds with one stone and use the same ???archival???
tapes as your backup source. The business need for data archiving is different than one
for disaster recovery. You may find that the archival process does not include all data
required to restore a system to a functioning state; instead, archiving might only retain
records that have business significance.
