"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

This includes drives within the server itself, or a disk drive attached to the server
by means of an internal controller. For simple space management, disk drives are often
placed in an externally powered disk cabinet attached directly to a server, as shown in
Figure 10-2.
CHAPTER 10 n HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS 246
Figure 10-2. In this typical deployment of locally attached storage, no other server may
access the external disk array.
For smaller implementations, the disk arrays are physically stored within the database
server. There??™s absolutely nothing wrong with this, although it does place a lower
limit on scalability (there is a limited amount of space for additional drives in an internal
drive bay). Either way, when it comes to locally attached storage, you have two internal
disk connectivity specifications to choose from: Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA)
(or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, known as SATA) and Small Computer System
Interface (SCSI).). There are also two external connectivity specifications: USB (2.0)
and FireWire.
ATA vs. SCSI
Personal computers generally have ATA or SATA drives.
