A really strong magnetic field could cause data corruption. Network communication
relies on a complex series of name-to-address resolution operations, routing from
switch to switch to firewalls, which are thankfully becoming increasingly more prevalent.
Server virtualization, while software-based, is being driven by the infrastructure community,
not DBAs. What impact does that have?
In addition to all of the expensive solutions promising continual data protection and
such, there is the ubiquitous question of power (the kind that comes from outlets in the
walls, not political). Lack of sufficient power, power fluctuation, and loss of power all create
a headache for the DBA.
If all of this weren??™t bad enough, there??™s the issue of heat. Without a proper HVAC
system in place, the best-designed disaster recovery solution will fail simply due to heat
wreaking havoc on the internal hardware.
I??™ve glibly mentioned a large number of subjects that will appear in this chapter. I in
no way expect to fully explain each of them. Those of you who are familiar with some of
these subjects may object to some of my explanations (???Hey, that isn??™t exactly how it
works???).
