"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

CHAPTER 9 n DATABASE SNAPSHOTS 242
Hardware Considerations
Following is a comment I hear from DBAs on a daily basis:
The server administrators must ensure everything gets written to tape; that isn??™t our
responsibility.
This is never said with disdain or defensively. The DBAs who say it really believe it isn??™t
their responsibility. In many organizations, this is true by policy. Each department has
specific responsibilities, and ???crossing silos,??? so to speak, is not only discouraged but also
forbidden. There is logic to this: you want staff members to confine their duties to a specific
scope to avoid utter chaos. So when I say what I??™m about to, I don??™t want you to think
that I??™m implying that you??™re slacking off or not doing what you believe is in the best
interest of your company. Saying that hardware ???isn??™t my responsibility??? is a common
viewpoint in the DBA world. However, the fact that it is a commonly held belief does not
make it correct.
I believe that all DBAs are responsible for the hardware supporting their platform.
I fundamentally disagree with the notion that responsibility ends with one??™s particular
job function or area of expertise.
