"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

??? Beware of granting access to the CREATE DATABASE command: Anyone with the right
to create a database can create a snapshot. If you have a development environment
in which developers need to be able to create their own databases, they will
also be able to create their own snapshots. As mentioned before, this can be
extremely useful in a development/test/QA environment, but left unmanaged, it
could completely consume disk space. If your environment dictates that developers
create their own databases, make sure that you take the necessary steps to
verify that you are managing your system resources effectively.
Summary
Database snapshots add yet another technique to your toolbox for dealing with
disaster recovery. Snapshots represent an intriguing technology initially intended for
high-availability databases, but as you??™ve seen, you can use them in a number of creative
ways. They aren??™t without their own set of issues, so you should always use them
with caution. In Chapter 12, I??™ll show you how database snapshots fit in with all of the
other disaster recovery options available within SQL Server 2005.
