Even if you intend to run in High Protection mode (no witness), say
yes to this and, if nothing else, reference the local instance. Why? You can always remove
the witness later, and this way you can see what??™s involved in configuring a witness.
Figure 8-15. Remember, the witness can be a SQL Express instance, so theoretically, running
on any other server in your environment (the workload on the witness) isn??™t excessive
unless it??™s monitoring a large number of mirroring sessions.
You have the option of configuring some or all of the required endpoints, as shown
in Figure 8-16. Since you??™re configuring this for the first time, both the principal and the
mirror instances are required (and thus grayed out). Again, the witness is optional, but
go ahead and include it.

instance would be grayed out, plus there would be fewer screens within the wizard. I
recommend configuring a witness whether or not you need it.
