CHAPTER 8 n DATABASE MIRRORING 213
The first step in configuring database mirroring is to launch the Configure Security
wizard, as shown in Figure 8-14. Personally, whenever presented with a wizard, I??™m a bit
concerned that I need to have all of my ducks in a row before beginning it. (If you??™ve ever
installed the original release of Reporting Services, you know what I mean.) However,
there??™s no need for concern here, unless you intend to mirror across untrusted Active
Directory domains. For simplicity and your sanity, I won??™t attempt that in this walkthrough
(say, ???Thank you, James???).
Figure 8-14. The key to configuring database mirroring is this Configure Security button,
which automates the creation of TCP endpoints.
CHAPTER 8 n DATABASE MIRRORING 214
Oddly enough, the Configure Security wizard gathers a significant amount of information,
some of it seemingly irrelevant to security. This wizard is actually configuring
endpoints, which need to be secured. I guess the Create Endpoint wizard would be a bit
of an esoteric wizard name for the average DBA.
As you can see in Figure 8-15, the wizard first determines whether or not a witness
instance is required.
