The server team still needs to install some applications, service packs, or hotfixes,
causing reboots, which in turn cause more failover events. Of course, such a server
shouldn??™t be joined to the cluster until it is fully prepped, but you??™ll find (hopefully not
the hard way!) that people do sometimes place a node into a cluster before that node has
been fully prepped for its task. And that??™s when automatic failback can lead to trouble.
nNote I despise all automatic operations that I didn??™t designate to be automatic in the first place. Yes,
it??™s personal bias, and perhaps without grounds, but not being in control of things that I should be always
worries me.
Clustering and Disaster Categories
SQL Server clustering is fairly limited in what type of disaster it protects against. Essentially,
it??™s only useful if there is a problem with one of the physical servers. You could still
lose the shared storage and lose everything. The individual servers must be in the same
location, because they??™re directly attached to the storage, so there??™s no help as far as environmental
issues are concerned.
