"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

CHAPTER 7 n CLUSTERING 188
Figure 7-5. SQL Agent cannot run if SQL Server has failed; thus, SQL Agent will fail as well.
nTip One of my many mantras that I share when teaching SQL Server to fledgling DBAs is, ???Know thy
application.??? It??™s one thing to support the back-end database, but you can??™t properly support that database
without knowing how it??™s used. I have one client who runs an application that uses the full-text search functionality
for one of its primary functions. If full-text search isn??™t running, the application is useless. I would
never have known that if I hadn??™t taken the time to try to understand how the application uses the database.
It only takes a few hours of observing the application in use.
Logical Failover
As important as it is to plan for physical failover, you also need to spend time considering
what actions you need to take in the event of a logical failover. Maybe you??™re one of the
lucky ones, and you won??™t need to do anything. Users who experience a brief outage will
go back into the application out of habit. You won??™t need to perform any additional work
or create any custom applications.
