SQL Server Clustering
Failover clustering is a feature provided by the operating system. SQL Server itself does
nothing in regard to clustering other than ease the installation process. SQL Server is a
cluster-able process that you can configure as a cluster resource??”no different than a file
share or an IP address.
SQL Server 2005 has dramatically improved its support of Windows clustering. The
best news of all: the Standard Edition supports two-node clustering, a significant licensing
savings for many environments. While SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition was
limited to the number of nodes it could support, SQL Server 2005 supports all of the
nodes supported by the operating system. If the operating system has an eight-node

cluster, you can install SQL Server 2005 on each node. If, in some future service pack,
more than an eight-node cluster is supported, SQL Server 2005 would theoretically be
able to use more than eight nodes.
