Some failovers are catastrophic, while others may simply be the
result of a deliberate test or a patch installation. Configuring a custom application can be
most useful when dealing with the latter group of failovers.
For example, say you have an older, unsupported server-based application that you??™d
like to run on your server environment (presumably to take advantage of newer, faster
hardware). The only problem is that in the event of a failover, it won??™t attempt to shut
itself down. This could result in data damage or lost data. With a simple batch file, you
could detect when a clustered service stops and request the legacy application to shut
down in whatever language it may understand.
Quorum
Derived from Latin, the word quorum goes back to the days of the Romans and refers
to a meeting in which various issues were discussed. Usually each topic included a
vote to establish a plan of action. A 100% majority was not required for a vote to pass
but, rather, a majority of those participating in the quorum. Often, a quorum would
either accidentally or deliberately exclude key individuals when a vote was expected??”
hmm, sounds like politics today.
