If you??™re
using a manual log-shipping configuration, remember that it isn??™t much more
work to set up a few alerts or have jobs to copy tables.
??? Don??™t create separate log backups: Plan on the location of the log-shipping backups
to be the primary location of your actual log backups (or treat it as an exact mirror).
If you create a log backup and neglect to copy it to the log-shipping backup location,
you??™ll invalidate your topology. Unfortunately, achieving the goal of using one
location for both primary and log backups requires tight control from a process perspective
over the SQL Server. Often, too many people have their hand in the SQL
cookie jar.
CHAPTER 6 n MAINTAINING A WARM STANDBY SERVER VIA LOG SHIPPING 172
??? Be prepared for failover and failback:Walk through your failover and failback processes,
document them, test them, rinse, and repeat. Did I mention document? A
failover event is rare, so it??™s critical that you remain diligent when it comes to preparation.
Again, I??™ve experienced firsthand the results of complacency. I cannot
stress preparation enough.
