Why? Since log shipping is primarily

focused on mitigating environmental disasters, the likelihood of it ever being invoked is
small. What??™s the likelihood that a tornado will wipe out your data center, or that flooding
will engulf the data center? The probability is pretty low, and if it isn??™t, you should
reconsider where you keep your data center.
Usually, cost and politics require that you use only existing SQL Servers, which are
primary for some other database, as secondary servers in log-shipping scenarios. Rarely
will management pony up the money to buy servers dedicated for use only when failover
occurs. This means you must use the painful method of failback when the primary server
has been restored, which is simply to start over from scratch.
Monitoring Your Log-Shipping Environment
One of the more problematic tasks with any automated process is establishing an effective
monitoring technique. SQL Server 2005??™s automated log-shipping system includes
the option of having a dedicated monitoring server.
