Leave the
process of changing DNS name resolution to your network staff. If you have no network staff, have an external
consulting firm come in to your company and validate the technique you??™re going to use. Trust me: it??™s
worth the small monetary investment to have someone else look over your work.
Dealing with Failback to the Primary Server
Now I??™ve come to failback, the second major problem with log shipping. Resetting the
log-shipping scenario back to its original configuration amounts to essentially recreating
the entire topology from scratch (you??™ve been documenting, haven??™t you?). If the
secondary server is in a position, both from a hardware and location perspective, to act
as the primary server, great; you can simply switch roles. The secondary will become the
primary, and the primary will become the secondary. Chances are you??™ll have an uninterrupted
LSN chain already in place, so you won??™t need to have a large database restore.
However, my experience tells me that believing the secondary server can become
the primary server is a fantasy. In most cases, secondary servers are either performing
another function in the first place or have minimal resources to support the database
and application using it for a long period of time.
