OCKHAM??™S RUSTY RAZOR
Long ago, William of Ockham, a philosopher/scientist (at the time, they were synonymous), came up
with what is now a well-defended principle in both modern philosophy and science. It basically says,
???The simplest explanation tends to be the correct one.??? I always argued against that mantra??”usually
unsuccessfully. (Yes, I was a philosophy geek in college. I even started in the PhD program, further
cementing my name in the annals of geekdom.) However, I am fully convinced that in the IS/IT world,
Ockham??™s razor is a dangerous idea.
The simplest explanation can only be correct if you have accounted for all factors in the equation.
In a disaster scenario (heck, in any technical scenario), how often is that the case? DBAs often choose
the simple solution because they can execute it quickly. The problem is that they don??™t take some time
to consider all the factors or possible issues involved.
