"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

CHAPTER 6 n MAINTAINING A WARM STANDBY SERVER VIA LOG SHIPPING 161
Figure 6-14. The transaction log backups are copied to the secondary server from the
primary server.
Finally, you need to choose among the ongoing transaction restore options. The
first option is to specify ???No recovery mode??? or ???Standby mode.??? In most cases, you
should choose ???No recovery mode??? because it renders the database on the secondary
server unusable.
It??™s possible to have the secondary database available as read-only. To do this, choose
the ???Standby mode??? option. It seems like you should always use this option, because in
standby mode, the secondary server is available for reporting purposes and such. However,
there is a significant drawback when using this mode.
As you can see in Figure 6-15, when you choose the ???Standby mode??? option, you
can also choose to ???Disconnect users in the database when restoring backups.??? This
means users will be forcibly disconnected when a transaction log is being restored. If
left unchecked, the transaction log restore will simply fail and wait for the next scheduled
restore attempt before loading it.
