Note that the default transaction log backup time is every 15 minutes. That??™s a pretty
safe default, but you may need more or require less due to resources. Remember, this
number is going to dictate how much data you lose in the event of a failure.
When using the log-shipping configuration tool, you specify one or more secondary
servers by launching the tool from the primary server and not from each of the secondary
servers. You don??™t need to configure each individual secondary server when using the
automated method of log shipping supplied by SQL Server (a nice improvement over earlier
versions). After you??™ve enabled the primary server and specified a backup job, file,
and network share locations, simply hit Add on the main screen, as shown in Figure 6-11.
A number of steps are involved when you add a secondary server. First, you need to
initialize the secondary server. This means you need to take a backup of the primary
server and restore (but not recover) it on the secondary server in preparation for log shipping.
As shown in Figure 6-12, you have three discrete options when it comes to getting a
copy of the database over to the secondary server.
