To access it, you must type it in
explicitly. The share and the directory underneath it should both be secure, so you don??™t need to do this
from a security standpoint, but rather simply to keep people from accidentally opening the share and poking
around. (Even administrators accidentally delete things.) However, make sure you don??™t use one of the
hidden administrative shares, such as C$, D$, or E$, because they require administrator access. If you care
at all about security, avoid these shares at all costs. If you have a solid network/server staff, they won??™t let
you use those hidden administrative shares anyway.
On the Transaction Log Backup Settings screen, you also set a retention time (the
default is 72 hours) and an alert time (the default is one hour). You??™ll probably want to
change these, as your backup location will double as the primary backup location for
your transaction logs. Would you only want to keep three days??™ worth of transaction logs
for your primary database? I wouldn??™t. You also won??™t be able to have a separate log
backup process running; if you do, you??™ll end up breaking the LSN chain for log shipping.
