If you understand
how it works, you??™re more likely to be able to troubleshoot problems effectively with an automated process.
Manually configuring log shipping is not that complicated.
I could go into the exact details of manual configuration, but SQL Server 2005 has a
solid, automated process already in place. My reason for reviewing manual configuration
is to give you a basic understanding of exactly what occurs during log shipping. As you
can see, it??™s far from complicated.
Log Shipping in SQL Server 2000
If you have SQL Server Enterprise Edition, you can use SQL Server Maintenance Plans
to automate the log-shipping configuration. I was never a big fan of that approach, since
I??™m not a big fan of Maintenance Plans under SQL Server 2000 (its functionality is just
compiled into a single program, sqlmaint.exe).
CHAPTER 6 n MAINTAINING A WARM STANDBY SERVER VIA LOG SHIPPING 155
If you have SQL Server Enterprise Edition and you want to have it configure log shipping
automatically, you simply have to enable the check box for it on the first screen of
Database Maintenance Plan Wizard, as shown in Figure 6-7.
