Do not back up
directly to a network location.
3. Create a restore job on the secondary server: The job needs to copy the log backup
from the shared location to the local server and restore the backup. Do not recover
the database.
That??™s it. Once set up, each step follows in sequence again and again and again??”
you get the picture. The process continues as long as needed. You need to use some
sort of naming scheme so that the secondary server knows which log backup to restore
(but not recover). SQL Agent tokens, covered in the previous chapter, are a great way to
automate this.
nNote Some of my colleagues tend to question the sense in configuring log shipping manually if it??™s
available as an automated technique. They have a valid point. However, I feel that going through the process
of manually configuring a log-shipping scenario is critical to becoming a true DBA. Why? Indicated as
a guiding principle earlier in the book, one of my personal mantras is to assume the worst. Don??™t expect an
automated process to be your only technique. What if there??™s a bug in the software? Are you willing to wait
until the next service pack? If you??™re able to create it, you??™ll understand how it works.
