However, quick failover and zero data loss are not
the main goals of log shipping. The primary purpose of a log-shipping topology is to protect
data.

Configuring Log Shipping
Contrary to popular belief, no specific tool is required to create a log-shipping scenario.
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup through Enterprise
Editions are nice enough to automate that process for you, but if you really want to set
everything up yourself, you can. If you want an automated method, a simple search on
the Web produces many homegrown scripts that people have used.
Some prefer to have SQL Server handle all of the log-shipping process. If you have
SQL Server 2000, you??™ll have to purchase the Enterprise Edition for all servers involved
(that pretty much shoots the multiple-standby-server topology out of the water).
SQL Server 2005, however, supports automated log shipping for every version except SQL
Server 2005 Express Edition. For those with limited financial resources, log shipping in

SQL Server 2005 becomes an even more attractive data-protection technique.
