Identifying tightly vs. loosely coupled design is critical in establishing the appropriate
disaster recovery approach.
CHAPTER 6 n MAINTAINING A WARM STANDBY SERVER VIA LOG SHIPPING 144
Multiple Standby Databases Are Possible
Theoretically, there??™s no limit to the number of standby databases you can maintain.
However, from a practical standpoint, having more than four or so reduces the likelihood
that you??™ll be able to properly monitor the process of maintaining those standbys.
Remember, you can set all the alerts you want, but that doesn??™t guarantee that an automated
process is automatic.
Savor this for a moment: there is no theoretical limit to the number of standby
servers you can have. How many other mitigation technologies can make a boast like
that? Not a one. Of course, each standby server adds administrative overhead, and you
want to limit the number for sake of sanity.
No Location Boundaries Exist
Because no constant nagging notification of server state is required, it is possible to
have standby servers all over the world. If we ever colonize Mars and have a network
connection to that planet, we could even place a standby log-shipping server there.
