Without a doubt, it has
improved significantly with every major release of SQL Server and every subsequent
service pack. However, it was never intended for use in disaster mitigation by establishing
a standby server.
You may remain unconvinced, but I stand fast in my point of view. In any event, to
truly cover replication would require another 150-200 pages. Replication is a technology
and a topic for another time and place.
Benefits of Log Shipping
I often find myself arguing the case for using log shipping (usually as opposed to some
sort of replication technique). Database mirroring (which I??™ll cover in depth in Chapter 8)
presents another alternative to log shipping??”some of my colleagues say a far superior
alternative. While I think database mirroring is a great technology, log shipping is more
appropriate in many business scenarios.
For some systems, you might simply need to move data to a remote location. The
need to protect against data loss is critical, but you achieve zero data loss by reentering
some data if you have to. Missing 15 or 30 minutes??™ worth of transactions isn??™t the end of
the world.
