Table 5-3 shows the risks inherent to the ???minimize data loss??? scenario.
CHAPTER 5 n CREATING A BACKUP/RECOVERY PLAN 132
Table 5-3. Risk Breakdown for a Minimal-Loss Scenario
Risk Worst-Case Impact Best-Case Impact
Data loss No data lost since the last good full/log Zero data lost
backup combination
Restore time Could include an old full restore and Current full restore, all logs since the
weeks??™ worth of log restores full restore, and the tail-log restore
Perceived Dependent on the number of log Dependent on the number of log
downtime restores restores
Scenario: Flexible Portability
Storing a copy of the data off-site is critical (just ask the city of New Orleans after the hurricane
season of 2005). However, sometimes storing data off-site isn??™t as easy as it sounds.
Some backups might not fit on to a single tape, or perhaps tape backup is unavailable, and
burning a copy of the backup to a DVD is your only option. In any event, your backup/
recovery plan must provide for a regular move to off-site storage.
Requirements
If your system exists in an environment that has a relatively high probability of disaster
(most notably environmental disasters), off-site storage of backups is a must.
