Inherent Risks
Having multiple copies of different types of backups on multiple media formats is guaranteed
to be an administrative nightmare.Without a documented system of cataloging
backups and a staff member to ensure that the cataloging is done correctly, the risk of
losing a single tape or file (or just misplacing it) goes up.
Without an equally effective naming scheme, restore operations could become confusing.
You certainly don??™t want to waste time trying to figure out which files you need to
restore from tape. Proper naming and cataloging in this scenario means the difference
between success and failure.
nCaution Some excellent third-party backup suites integrate large volumes of data from multiple
sources and catalog it automatically. They can be an excellent investment in a large environment, but be
careful in these situations. There is a tendency for the administrator of that system (it requires a dedicated
administrator) to take ownership, explicitly or implicitly, of the entire backup/restore process. You cannot let
that happen. The backup administrator should be in control of the process but not the design of the
process, or the ownership.
